It only takes 24 hours for plaque that is not removed from your teeth to turn into calculus (tartar). Daily home & professional cleanings help to prevent calculus from building but life happens and some patients will need a deep cleaning (cleaning to remove calculus from below the gum line). Once this deep cleaning is completed, your dental hygienist will put you on a maintenance program of 3-4 cleanings a year to maintain your healthy teeth and gums.
