POST OP INSTRUCTIONS – ORAL SURGERY
***The following instructions will help minimize discomfort & reduce the risk of developing a dry socket and/or infection.
1. DO NOT SMOKE OR VAPE for 24 hours following surgery. This can lead to a dry socket, which can be very painful.
2. DO NOT DRINK THROUGH A STRAW for 24 hours following surgery.
3. DO NOT SPIT for 24 hours following surgery. After brushing your teeth, lean over the sink and let the toothpaste run out of your mouth.
4. DO NOT RINSE MOUTH for 24 hours following surgery. After 24 hours, you may rinse lightly with warm salt water. This will help to keep any food particles from collecting in the extraction site. Add ½ tsp of salt to a 6 oz glass of warm water and swish gently for 20 seconds.
5. BLEEDING: Don’t be alarmed if bleeding occurs. Following extractions, bleeding is normal. Keep biting pressure on gauze to help stop the bleeding. This may take 1-4 hours. If persistent bleeding occurs (continually filling the mouth with blood), please call the office immediately.
6. SWELLING: Place ice pack (or ice in towel) on area outside of face where surgery took place. Repeat for ½ hour on and ½ hour off for up to four hours.
7. EATING: Eat what foods are comfortable for you. You may find that softer foods are easier until more healing has occurred. DO NOT EAT until the anesthetic has worn off. Do not drink hot, carbonated, or alcoholic beverages and avoid spicy foods.
8. It is normal to feel some discomfort for a few days following oral surgery. Call us immediately if the following symptoms are severe or persistent:
a. Heavy or increased bleeding
b. Pain or swelling that continues beyond 2-3 days
c. A bad taste or odor in the mouth
d. A reaction to medication
If you are experiencing any of these severe symptoms, please call Dr. Friedman on our emergency line 832-691-4466.
